In April, my dad was traveling to visit a family member on his motorcycle. He was on the highway after midnight when he struck a deer. Thankfully a couple came upon the accident and called for emergency crews. They stayed with my dad until officers arrived. He was transported to Iowa City for TBI. He was on life support when I got the call. Upon arrival, my heart broke seeing him in that condition. After meeting with medical teams on several occasions I had to make the decision to take him off the machines and donate his organs. While he wasn’t a registered donor, he was a kind soul and I know helping others would be his choice. He was always very talented and could do anything he set his mind to. He saved two men by donating his kidneys and those two men have children of their own. I may have lost my dad, but those children get to enjoy theirs for awhile longer and that gives my broken heart peace. He left behind his life partner and love of his life, and myself his only child. I am praying for the families of the recipients and hope to one day connect with them!
