Anatomical Gift Transplantation Fund
In 1996 the Iowa Legislature established an Anatomical Gift Transplantation Fund (AGTF) (see Iowa Code 142C.15). At the time of motor vehicle registration or renewal, Iowans are asked if they wish to donate a dollar or more to this fund. These donated funds may be used to award grants to transplant recipients or candidates, living organ donors or legal representatives. The purpose of the grant is to provide financial assistance for the reimbursement of out-of-pocket costs incurred by the patient (applicant) and not available from any other third-party payer.
The reimbursements to the anatomical gift grant applicants are not considered income and therefore will not generate a Form-1099. As per Iowa Code 422.7(30a) donors may subtract unreimbursed travel and lodging expenses and lost wages in an amount not to exceed $10,000. Applicants should confer with a financial advisor and/or tax preparer with questions.
Effective December 1, 2022 the AGTF grants are administered by Iowa Donor Network.
